Soroptimist International of Shah Alam (SISA) was chartered in Shah Alam, the “City of Orchids” on May 4, 1995.

and currently there are seventeen members.

We are part of the world wide organization, Soroptimist International, which has members in 122 countries and has consultative status in the United Nations.  Our members are mostly women in management and professional services.  We work for the advancement of women and provide services to the local and global community.

Soroptimist International of Shah Alam (SISA) has done several service programmes.

From 1997-2000, our main focus was on Education.  Three schoolgirls from underprivileged families in Shah Alam were “adopted” under our “Adopt-a-child” programme.  We pledged to cover all expenses incurred by the children in the Upper Primary school education, mainly school fees,

school uniforms, books and also tuition classes for the UPSR examination.  Even though we longer give financial assistance, we still keep in touch with the girls especially during festivals.

Other main short-term projects in different programme areas are:

Health:  Eight elderly underprivileged people were taken for health screening under the Robin Good Project organized by the PJ Community Centre at the Amcorp Mall, PJ in the year 2000. We had also sponsored two doctors to Afghanistan under Mercy Malaysia in the year 2002.

Environment:  Interclub project under SI Bangsar to plant trees in Tanarimba, Janda Baik.

Community Service to the Elderly:  Food hampers and cash donations were distributed to 20 underprivileged elderly citizens, some of whom were bedridden in Sri Setia, Sungei Way under the Warga Tua Project in the year 2001.

Economic Development:  Skills training for single mothers was carried out in the year 2003.  Our target group was single mothers, with PMR or SPM level of education, who were unable to leave their children alone at home to earn a living. The home-based childcare training was to enable them to set up a taska in their own homes.  Out of the 25 participants who attended the programme, 4 women managed to raise their economic status by setting up a home-based taska or by finding work in an established facility.

SISA is now celebrating 12 years of service and commitment to our Soroptimist vision of a “Global voice for Women”.
